Can You Pass This Test? How To Get a Soft Feel In Your Hand While Riding Dressage

Finally!! A video that puts it into words. There are a lot of videos that talk about contact and feel here on Dressage Hub but this video by Featherlight Horsemanship covers the missing link!

It Is Not A War

Riding dressage is not supposed to be a tug of war with your horse. Dressage is supposed to be a balanced and connected partnership between both the horse and rider. Previously we have shown videos that show the tug of war, like our video titled, All In Is All Out. Many riders defended the video claiming it is merely a moment in time, in reality, it was 4 years’ worth of footage. What they are missing is this key piece that is covered in this video.

When your horse gives to you the immediate response should be to give back, not to keep pulling to get more. If a rider continues to pull on the reins once the horse gives to the rein there is no relief or reward for the correct reaction. In doing so, the horse becomes frustrated with what is expected and will eventually fight back or end up in a state of abuse that is called learned helplessness.

Take The Test

I encourage you to try this exercise on the ground with your trainer or your friends. It will give you a better understanding of how to correctly develop a soft contact with your horse. It is a great test to see if you are on the right track or you need some improvement.
