Sonke Rothenberger and Cosmo Beat Isabell Werth in the Grand Prix Special
HAGEN, Germany, April 29, 2018–Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo fully back on form after an eight-month competition break performed a near-best result to win the Horses & Dreams CDI4* Grand Prix Special Sunday, repeating a year-ago victory over Isabell Werth on Emilio.

In the repeat performance at this same start of the open air circuit, Sönke and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding that were 2016 Olympic and 2017 European Championship team gold medalists scored 82.255 per cent. The best result for the pair is 82.479 per cent set at the Europeans in Gothenburg, Sweden in August–the last competition for the pair before their ring break.

Sönke, 23 years old, and the horse that he has competed since Young Riders in 2014 and he is aiming for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September, displayed a rusty first start since the break to place third in the Grand Prix Saturday but recovered for faultless performance in the Special.

“Cosmo felt more consistent today,” he said. “He got used to the atmosphere remarkably quickly. Although I decided to still stay on the cautious side in the extended canter. I’m still playing with fire.”

Isabell and Emilio were awarded 81.383 per cent for second place, the third time this year the world’s No. 2 combination–Isabell is ranked No. 1 on her Olympic and European Championship gold medal mount Weihegold OLD–has been beaten, twice by Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy in February.
