How To Ride Counter Canter to Flying Change In Dressage
The Counter Canter
Counter canter is a stepping stone to not only developing the flying changes in dressage but they also help you prepare for the tempi changes in which you will be required to get your horse to do a flying change when and where you ask for it.
As a rider I have always been annoyed by counter canter, it seems like something that just gets in my way. As I have gained more wisdom in my riding throughout the years I began to understand why it is an important step in laying the foundation and preparing your dressage horse for the grand prix.
What You Will Learn
In this video, we watch Olympian Debbie McDonald teach a lesson where she works through some of the common issues with the counter canter to flying change. It may seem daunting to straighten your horse to prepare for the change but it is an essential skill for your horse to learn. Not only will it give you straighter changes but it will also prepare you for rockstar flying changes every stride aka the one tempi’s.
